What to Expect Your First Month at Grit

The truth? It won’t always feel amazing. But it will be worth it.

If you’ve heard of us, maybe even followed us for a while, and are thinking “Maybe I’ll try this gym out”—this post is for you.

We know that the first step into something new is always the hardest. You’re juggling work, family, responsibilities, and maybe a little self-doubt. You want to feel better, stronger, and more capable—but you also want to know what you’re really signing up for.

Here’s a look at what your first month at Grit Athletics will actually be like—from the nerves to the wins, to the real kind of hard that leads to real growth.

Week 1: Orientation and Observation

This is where the foundation gets laid. You’ll meet our coaches, learn how our group strength training works, and get introduced to the flow of class.

We don’t just throw you into the fire. We walk you through everything—your warm-up, your lifts, your conditioning, and how to scale or modify it to match where you’re at.

You might feel awkward. You might feel excited. You might feel sore after the first few sessions—and that’s all expected. The key is just to keep showing up. Nobody at Grit expects you to be in peak shape already. That’s why you’re here.

Week 2: Soreness and Self-Doubt

This is when you’ll likely start to feel it: muscles waking up that haven’t worked this hard in a long time. You might even wonder, “Is this normal?”

Yes. Soreness means your body is responding to training. It doesn’t mean something’s wrong. In fact, it’s one of the first signs of growth.

But here’s where I want to be really honest with you: at some point, your brain will chime in with doubt.

“Should I be this tired?”

“Is it supposed to feel this hard?”

“What if I’m not cut out for this?”

One of my clients said this out loud to me recently. She had a full-blown moment of second-guessing herself after a tough week. She felt overwhelmed by how her body was responding. She wasn’t used to feeling that kind of physical stress—and she assumed that because it didn’t always feel good, maybe it wasn’t right for her.

But here’s what I told her—and what I’ll tell you:

Growth comes from stress. Not injury, not punishment, but intentional, controlled challenge. Lifting weights, breathing hard, sticking with it when it’s uncomfortable—that’s what creates change.

Of course it feels hard. You’re doing something hard. That’s the whole point.

Week 3: Real Conversations and Small Wins

This is where you start to get in a rhythm. You know where to park, where to stand, and when to grab the heavier kettlebell. Your coach remembers your name. You feel like you belong.

You might not see massive changes yet in the mirror, but you’ll feel a shift: you’re a person who trains now. You’re learning to move well, lift safely, and listen to your body in a way that builds it up instead of beating it down.

We’ll likely check in with you around now—either informally in class or during a goal review session. Not to pressure you, but to support you. Because consistency takes more than motivation—it takes a plan and a coach who actually cares.

Week 4: The Corner Turn

Something clicks. Your lifts feel smoother. You recover faster. You start to feel proud—not just of how you’re performing, but of the fact that you’re sticking with something that matters.

This is when we often hear, “I actually look forward to class now.”

You might not be chasing PRs or six-pack abs yet, but you’re building something better: a habit. A routine. A system that makes you stronger in every area of life.

So What’s the Catch?

Here’s the part most gyms won’t tell you:

Training doesn’t always feel good.

It feels empowering. It feels energizing. But sometimes, it just feels hard. It’s not a red flag—it’s the process working.

We don’t believe in punishing workouts or toxic fitness culture. But we also don’t lie to you and say this will be easy. We meet you where you are, and we coach you forward.

That’s what makes Grit different.

The Bottom Line

Your first month at Grit Athletics is where it all begins. It’s where you lay the foundation for a stronger body, a clearer mind, and more resilience in your daily life. You’ll be supported, coached, and reminded constantly that you’re capable of more than you think.

It won’t be perfect. It won’t be easy. But it will be worth it.
